LARGO, FL — The city of Largo is grieving the loss of Mark Foster, a beloved science teacher at Indian Rocks Christian School and longtime volleyball coach, who passed away recently.
For over 30 years, Foster made an immense impact on the Largo community through his dual roles as an educator and coach. Beyond the classroom and court, he served as a mentor, role model and source of guidance for every student and player lucky enough to cross his path.
“Coach Foster coached the game of life as much as he did the game of volleyball,” said one former player. “His lessons went far beyond the technical aspects of the sport to focus on character, ethics and developing one’s moral compass.”

In the competitive world of high school sports, Foster stood out for his steadfast commitment to shaping better human beings in addition to better athletes. He embedded concepts like resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship into his coaching philosophy, measuring success not just by the scoreboard but by the positive growth he nurtured in his students.
As Indian Rocks’ head volleyball coach for over 20 years, Foster led the team to three state championship victories. As a science educator, he brought knowledge to life through imaginative experiments and hands-on learning. He had a knack for breaking down complex concepts into digestible chunks that engaged curiosity. His classroom door was always open.
“The true test of one’s influence is seen through those they leave behind,” said the school’s principal. “While we deeply mourn Coach Foster’s passing, his values and legacy will live on through every life he touched — from his family to his classroom to his players on the court.”
The Largo community will honor Foster’s memory by embracing and upholding the core values he instilled: courage, honesty, determination in the face of adversity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Through remembering his spirit, Foster’s indelible legacy will continue to motivate and uplift generations to come.
Information regarding memorial services will be forthcoming. The school has opened a Memory Book for students and community members to share their stories and favorite memories of Coach Foster. Though he may be gone, his deep impact will be felt by all those fortune enough to have crossed paths with this exceptional educator, mentor and coach.
