Mr. Carey was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer last fall, shortly after retiring. He underwent surgery and chemotherapy, but the disease progressed too rapidly. In his final weeks, he was surrounded by his loving family as he received care at home.
Beyond his teaching career, Mr. Carey was an avid reader, passionate about discussing literature, and sharing book recommendations with students and colleagues. He dedicated much of his free time to outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and tending to his vegetable garden. His environmental passion led him to oversee the school’s recycling club for several years.
A memorial service for Mr. Carey will be held this Saturday at 2 pm at Lincoln Park Methodist Church, where he was a longtime member. All students, teachers, and community members whose lives were touched by Mr. Carey are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. The family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, contributions be made to the Matthew Carey Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Lincoln Park Education Foundation.
